Almost all of them come back to the same thing: not eating enough for the work being done.
There is a widespread assumption in the performing arts that eating less is a form of discipline. It is worth saying plainly at the start: for a body doing this volume of work, under-eating is not discipline. It is a performance problem, and over time it becomes a health one.
This page is about fuelling for the load you are actually doing. What happens when you do not, what each part of the diet is for, and what performers most often cut that they should not.
Performers under-fuel for a mix of reasons, and appearance pressure is only one of them. Long days with no scheduled breaks. Rehearsal rooms with nowhere to eat. Nerves suppressing appetite before a show. Finishing at eleven at night with no appetite and no shops open. A culture where eating light before performing is passed down as sensible advice.
Most of it is circumstantial rather than deliberate, which is worth knowing, because it means most of it is solvable with planning rather than willpower.
Sports science describes this as low energy availability: the state where energy taken in does not cover the energy spent in training and performance, leaving too little for the body's basic functions. The research on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, published across the British Journal of Sports Medicine, documents what follows.
The measured consequences include reduced bone density and higher stress fracture risk, disrupted or absent menstrual cycles, lowered testosterone, suppressed immune function, impaired concentration and coordination, slower recovery between sessions, and reduced training response. Performance declines rather than improves.

Research across dance populations has repeatedly found reduced bone mineral density in dancers with low energy availability, alongside elevated stress fracture rates. In a career where the load is repetitive and the same structures are stressed nightly, this compounds.
It is also largely invisible until something breaks. There is no daily symptom that says bone density is falling.

Fuel for the work, not around it
The most common structural mistake is eating roughly the same amount every day regardless of what that day asks for. A two-show day and a day off are not the same job, and treating them identically means one of them is wrong.
The principle: fuel for the day you are having, not the day you wish you were having. Under-eating on a heavy day is the version of this that causes harm.
Short version of each, without the noise. None of this is a prescription; it is the reasoning that sits underneath one.
Protein provides the amino acids used to repair and rebuild muscle after loading. For performers this is not about size; it is about recovering from last night well enough to do it again tonight. Without adequate protein, repeated loading breaks tissue down faster than it rebuilds.
Sports nutrition research consistently finds that people doing regular intensive work need meaningfully more protein than general population guidelines suggest, and that spreading it across the day works better than one large serving. Sources include meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, tofu, tempeh and combinations of grains and pulses.
Protein needs go up with load, not down. Recovery is where protein does its work, and recovery is what an eight-show week is short of.
Carbohydrate is the body's most accessible fuel, stored as glycogen in muscle and liver and drawn on heavily during intensive work. It is also the brain's preferred fuel, which is why low intake shows up as poor concentration and slow decision-making as much as physical fatigue.
Glycogen stores are finite and deplete across a demanding day. They refill from carbohydrate intake, which is why a low-carbohydrate approach and an eight-show week are a poor match. Sources include rice, oats, potatoes, pasta, bread, fruit and legumes.
Carbohydrate is the most commonly and most damagingly restricted part of a performer's diet. It is the fuel the work actually runs on.
Dietary fat is essential rather than optional. It is required for hormone production, including the sex hormones connected to bone health and menstrual function, and it is necessary to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Very low fat intake is associated with hormonal disruption.
Omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, walnuts, flaxseed and chia, are also linked in research to reduced inflammation and to cognitive and mood outcomes. Sources include olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, oily fish and eggs.
Cutting fat too low does not make a body leaner. It disrupts the hormonal systems that protect bone and regulate cycles.
Hydration affects almost every measure that matters on stage. Research on dehydration finds measurable declines in concentration, reaction time, coordination, mood and perceived effort at levels of fluid loss well below what most people register as thirst.
For singers it matters twice over: vocal fold tissue relies on systemic hydration, and the effects of drinking are not immediate, which means hydration on the day of a show is largely determined by the day before. Stage lighting, costume and heat all increase losses.
Thirst is a late signal. Pale straw-coloured urine is the practical marker, and keeping water visible works better than remembering.
A few are worth performers knowing specifically. Iron, because deficiency causes fatigue and reduced endurance and is more common in menstruating and plant-based populations. Calcium and vitamin D, because both are central to bone density in a career that loads bone hard, and vitamin D is difficult to obtain from indoor days. B vitamins, because they are involved in converting food into usable energy. Magnesium, for muscle function and sleep quality.
The reliable route to most of these is variety across whole foods rather than supplementation. Supplements have their place where there is a diagnosed deficiency, which is a matter for a blood test and a professional rather than guesswork.
Restricting whole food groups is the fastest way to create a micronutrient gap, and those gaps show up as fatigue long before anything is diagnosed.
Something within an hour of waking. Starting the day behind is almost impossible to recover from once a show schedule takes over.
A stocked fridge on your day off removes most poor decisions later in the week. This is the highest-return habit available on a run.
Energy through the second act, recovery between shows, how often you get ill, how quickly you warm up. These tell you whether fuelling is working. Appearance does not.
When something feels off across a run, the most common cause is the simplest one, and the one least likely to be considered.
